The trend of wooden glasses

Finding the right eyewear can sometimes be quite difficult. The choice is huge and you have the choice between different colors, brands, shapes, latest technologies and materials. Moreover, new and innovative products are launched every year in the hope of providing the wearer with even more choice and comfort. In 2017, glasses made of real wood were presented for the first time at the Opticians' Fair. The natural material that embodies aesthetics and nature quickly found followers and has since become a real part of the optic industry. Wooden glasses, a trend that will delight everyone

The origins of the wooden frame

We need to go back to the 13th century to learn more about the origins of wooden eyewear. At this time, an Italian scientist named Salvino D. Armati tested the first ophthalmic lenses. However, the eyeglass frame at that time had nothing to do with the frame that we know today. Natural materials such as shells, branches or even broken glass were used to somehow hold the glasses together.

From the Middle Ages, people began to become interested in their own looks, and glasses became more and more a status symbol of wisdom and education. Also the desire for aesthetics and visual comfort offered by the glasses increased. As a reminder: At this time, there were no temples, glasses were attached to the nose.

The Murano glass used in the 13th century was then covered with wooden rings to improve its appearance. As you can see here, everything began with wooden rings that were placed around the glasses. Since there was no plastic at that time, the first ever glasses were made out of 100% wood.

Complex manufacture of wooden frames

Patience and thoroughness are essential to this work. In fact, wood is a living matter that is difficult to tame. Manufacturers need to reconcile tradition and new technologies to create "old-new-style" eyewear. Paradoxically, increasing demand forces production to be maximized. Suffice it to say that designing glasses with a hard-to-control material like wood is a real challenge.

Fortunately, there are some experts in the field who show us that you can make beautiful frames for women and men, even with heavy materials. Add to that the ecological side, the wooden frames are 100% ecological.

The techniques used to manufacture vary from one pair of glasses to another. Some prefer to rely on the glulam method to appeal to discerning customers for comfort. This technique makes it possible to create glasses that combine aesthetics, comfort and lightness. The use of solid wood continues to interest other manufacturers. The idea is to captivate wearers thanks to the natural, raw and controlled appearance of this species of wood.

Why are wooden frames so popular?

The wooden frame is characterized by its green side. In fact, the use of wood in this sense is environmentally friendly, which is not the case with other materials such as acetate or a molded plastic.

Wooden glasses are very much in fashion. They complete the quest for originality with an eco-chic look. In addition, they are pleasant to look at and touch. It should be noted, however, that the wood remains fragile. It has to be handled with great delicacy. This is a very important habit given the cost of such a frame. Even if the price evolves, it oscillates at around 150GBP.

What future can one predict for these green glasses?

Today's world allows the makers of wooden frames to take advantage of many opportunities. In 2017, these environmentally friendly accessories have become the star of the large optics salon. Since then, public interest has continued to grow.

Eyewear manufacturers such as Safilo and Luxottica go out of their way to offer pleasant and pretty wooden eyewear. They recognized the challenge of designing wooden frames that do not hurt on the nose. Another important challenge is the production without deforestation. In other words, the goal is to create a production line that respects the environment. In the choice of wood, ebony and beech are currently the most popular materials for manufacturing. The oak also finds buyers because of its easy-to-work character.

In fact, current generations are constantly looking for accessories that combine aesthetics and comfort. These are properties that wood can perfectly offer in addition to its green side. In terms of style, the wooden frame can create a trendy and fun look. Even the search for originality can be continued with wooden sunglasses.

Where can I find glasses with high quality wooden frames?

A detour to your favorite optician can help you find the rare gem. However, it is necessary to check the quality of the product, because only the real handmade wooden frames have a flawless finish. Please take care that real wooden glasses should be treated with care. However, this does not mean that the frames will break at the slightest movement.

Otherwise, simply select the wooden frame that refines your face. On the internet there are a lot of good addresses that offer good prices and quality. If a wooden frame is too exotic for you, you can still use other materials such as acetate, optyl, metal and carbon. In Visionet's online shop you will find branded eyewear at very competitive prices. We hope to see you soon.
